This has been a crazy few weeks, as I had a drawn out case of appendicitis and had surgery a few weeks ago... Finally now getting back to checking out the anemia numbers.

On 3/5 I had a blood draw that one dr's office initially told me my ferritin was 15--I thought that was great considering I'd been at 1 in November and January, and 3 in February. Well, my primary care doctor told me yesterday this lab doesn't report anythign lower that 15, so it's <15, and we don't know what it is. :( Good new is my hemoglobin is 12.9 and hematocrit is 39, both normal, though just barely. Given the low ferritin and recently diagnosed celiac, I definitely need to stay on iron for quite a while longer.

Here's what I don't get. Since beginning iron, I've had a gradual improvement in most of my symptoms--shortness of breath, fatigue, tachycardia, etc.,. Recently (after my surgery, and blood loss was minimal, so I don't think this was the issue) these sx have started to reoccur. In fact the other night every time I'd even stand up my pulse would shoot up to 130. I thought I was imagining it, so I put on my husband's HR monitor (for exercise) and I was right. Lying down and resting I was 80-90, but standing up or moving around at all I was at 100-130.

I spoke with the dr yesterday and now he wants me to go back to a cardiologist. I really don't want to--I've had cardio work-ups twice before, and all they found was a few PVCs and PACs with tachycardia from anemia. It's expensive and time consuming and I just don't think they're going to find anything.

My only thoughts are that it could be thyroid related, as I had three CT scans with iodine contrast in 2 weeks, and just found out my thyroid antibodies are out of whack.

Could it still be iron, even though my hemoglobin/hematocrit is good? Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Stephanie
