There are many causes of anemia. I have hemolytic anemia, and when I am in a relapse, I often have protein in my urine. I get jaundiced, and my urine turns a tea color, and I have major heart palps. The hemolytic anemia causes my B12 and folic acid levels to go low.

The treatment for hemolytic anemia is not to just treat the low iron, B12 and folic acid levels, as it is an autoimmune disease where the body is attacking the red cells. They have to suppress the immune system to get the body to stop its attack (called hemolysis). Once that's taken care of, you have to repair the damage done by the hemolysis - raise B12 and folic levels, look to see if your ferritin is low, etc.

Have they tested you for hemolytic anemia? One way they know is through a blood test - they check your 'retic' count. (It's an abbreviation for reticulocyte, I think.) Anyway, it tells them if your red cells are immature. If most are immature it means your body is destroying them before they get old.

Let us know how your counts turn out.

Jill
