New test results
Aug 1, 2008
I had my blood taken again on Tuesday the 29th, and here are the new results vs. the old ones taken on the 23rd:

Hemoglobin -- was 101, is now 107
Hematocrit -- was 0.30, is now 0.32
MCV -- was 76, is now 77
MCH -- was 25, is now 26
MCHC -- was 332, is now 553
RDW -- was 16.1, is now 16.2 (this seems high, normal levels are 11.5 - 15.5)
Platelets -- were 266, are now 315

Seems like a decent improvement for six days on iron supplements and eating lots of iron rich foods. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know what MCV, MCH, MCHC and RDW are???

Thanks for any info, and for everyone's support -- it's nice to know I'm not alone in this!
nervousgal--You are responding well to oral supplements. Congrats!

MCV--Mean Corpuscular Volume is the size of the RBC.

MCH--Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin measures the amount of hemoglobin in a single red blood cell.

MCHC--Mean Corpuscular Hgb Concentration measures the average amount of Hgb per unit volume (100) of packed red cells.

RDW-Random Distribution of Weight tells how consistent the size the RBC's are. This helps to DX what type of anemia it is.

The MCV and MCH are viewed together as are the H & H to show what degree and type of anemia are present.

In simple Iron deficiency anemia--the H & H, MCV, MCH, and MCHC are DEcreased in values. The Platelets and RDW are INcreased.

MCV is what I always look at and the optimal adult is 90. I was 65 low when DX'ed.

Keep eating the iron rich diet along with your supplements and you will do very well. FLFLOWERGIRL:)
