My mother has radiation proctopathy and has had bleeding to the point that she had angina and was rushed to the hospital. She is now in a rehab trying to raise her rbc and hemoglobin. Her rbc was 2.09 -then 1.94 now 2.11. Her hemoglobin was 5.2 then 5.5 now 4.9. She is taking Procrit along with iron. Does it make sence that if the RBC came up dramatically as it did (3 days) that the hemoglobin just didn't keep up with that rapid increase in cells? Just hoping to make it good news not bad.
I'm sure it will be fine now that she is being treated. When I was anemic and my hemoglobin and hematocrit were below normal, my RBCs were fine. So it could be that the RBCs are more stable and respond better than the other two numbers (the three values--hematocrit, hemoglobin and RBCs together--are used to diagnose anemia). It can take awhile for all fo them to rise. How much iron are they giving her?
