Hello, new here
Nov 9, 2008
Hi
Glad I found these boards. I have been suffering from some odd symptoms for about 3 yrs and discovered that I have a iron count of 2.
My symptoms seemed to come around a time that I was under a great deal of stress and I had suffered a kidney stone and had sepsis after my surgery. So I thought it was anxiety.
I noticed that I had become so tired, I mean TIRED. I just felt so drained. I felt tired mentally and physically. Dr said it was anxiety which I do have a history of.
I started having heart palpitations and felt short of breath, like my heart could not catch up to my breathing. I had strange sensations in my legs and feet. I also was dizzy and off balanced a lot and had pressure in my head. I was afraid I had MS. I knew something was not right and did not want to take all these antidepressants they kept pushing at me and found out that my iron was this low.. I had also found out from my Dr that I had Pica, I chewed and swallowed 4 packs a gum a day for 3 yrs.

I craved that gum so bad, that my mouth would water at the thought of it.
But the thing that I found most scarey was this weird brain, head sensation that would get. I felt spaced out, dream like and just unable to think, etc.
Do you all think this was from my iron being so low?? At this point, I don't have it, it would come and go. I felt lack of mental clarity, just strange and it scared me to death!
I am on iron meds and feel a bit better, no more Pica and discovered my periods are the culprit. I have been on iron for 4 months now.
Can anyone relate to these odd symptoms?
Thank you!!!!!!!
Please reply I am so afraid!

hi rhiannon-

i've also experienced a lot of your symptoms with my only finding after a million blood tests being low iron.

"I started having heart palpitations and felt short of breath, like my heart could not catch up to my breathing. I had strange sensations in my legs and feet. I also was dizzy and off balanced a lot and had pressure in my head. I was afraid I had MS."

i could have written that myself if it makes you feel any better. i went to the neurologist and got checked for MS to rule it out. i've been having the weird pressure in my head along with vertigo. the vertigo is like a rocking or like things are moving around me when they're really not sometimes when someone asks me something i feel like it takes me ten times longer to process the information and answer it. brain fog. you'll notice a lot of people on this board have it.
have any of your symptoms resolved completely? what about the pressure in your head?
i've been on iron for about six or seven weeks and i haven't seen much of an improvement so i'm always curious to see how other people respond to the iron.
i hope you feel better.

I have one more question, did any of you with low iron ever feel like your symptoms improved and then got worse? The only thing I can think of is my periods, losing so much blood and maybe my poor body was trying to make iron and I would feel a little better?
I am sitting here in tears as I read thru these posts thinking my God, has this been what's wrong with me all this time? I can recall going up the stairs so slow b/c I felt short of breath and never knew that it could have been my iron? I went to the Mts this summer for vacation, another place that probably added to my low iron, affecting my o2 being in such high elevation and recall being so winded.
I can't wait to see what my levels are on Wed. I guess it will take a long time to get from a 2 to a decent level. I take 2 iron tabs a day with Vit C......
Thanks
