I was on pred the first year I was diagnosed, they should give you between 30mg and 60mg if you don't respond they increase it. I didn't respond so I was on 120mg for quite a while once your levels start remounting....every one is different, they start tapering it 10mg at a time. The side effects are what they are, swelling also called Cushings Syndrome, anxiety, hunger insomnia. You have to bear with it, it saved my life amongst other treatments. doing mild excercise helps, I suppose at 80 it can be difficult.
Hemolytic anemia seems to be diagnosed when other things go wrong by what I've experienced and heard by other sufferers, in my case I had virus like symptoms and developed into pneumonia. They don't keep you on pred permanently as the side effects....loss of calcium in the bones mainly they might taper her off it and get her on azatriopin, an immune supressant.
Each case of HA is different and I suppose age is a factor, but I can relate, I hated the pred and dread ever getting back on it!!!!!!!
