Organic supplements
Jan 30, 2009
After having many symptoms for a few years and being diagnosed with other things that I didn't really have, blood tests confirmed that I am anemic. I know it's probably not as bad as some of you (ferritin 7, Hematocrit 32 ~ I didn't get my whole chart b/c of bad weather, I'll pick them monday). My dr told me to get Ferris Gluconate because it was gentler on my stomach (I have LOTS of GI issues). But they never said when to come back in and see if they're working???

I tried to find the gluconate but didn't have luck so I went to my local Organic/herbal store. They recommended an herbal iron supplement called "Chelated Iron". It says 1 capsule is 27mg. They also recommended a digestive enzyme and probiotics to help my stomach issues while taking the iron.

My question is, is this enough to help bring my numbers up? The ferris sulfate is 325mg per serving. The PCP told me that my levels didn't get this low over night and it might take a few months to see a difference. How long might it take before I see any improvement?

There was someone here in the past, poster (chickielou), you may want to go way back and read her posts. She was taking this same iron and said that although it is only 27mgs that it is highly absorbed. That would be the difference. You could try it and see if it works by your next blood test. Stay away from the ferris sulfate if you have GI problems that would not be good for you. It gave me enteritis for 3 months and landed me in the ER after I lost 15 pounds. It also has 65mgs of elemental iron it each dose, not 325 as the bottle leads you to believe.

I ended up taking Poly Iron 150mgs 2X daily=300 of elemental iron easy on the GI tract and I can even take it on an empty stomach. You could try it if the other didn't work for you. However, I would not add the other thing with it until you see how you are feeling on the iron alone or you won't know what is bothering you. You do need to add Vit-C 500mgs unless it is already in there I can't remember with that specific one. You should begin to see some improvement in a few 3 weeks. My ferritin went from 2-3 in 3 days. I know that sounds silly but to go up in the right direction is a big thing! FLFLOWERGIRL:)
