I saw my doctor again today to follow-up after my very heavy period. He said that some tests he felt were important were missed ever since my anemia was diagnosed. These included TIBC and serum iron (there were a few other ones too). Can anyone tell me the purpose of this test as well as how serum iron is different than hemoglobin or ferritin levels?

Also, basically they are concerned because they don't feel I'm responding well enough to the iron shots and with all GI sources of bleeding ruled out and my periods being (somewhat) controlled by HBC, they are wondering why I'm not responding better. Could these extra tests provide an answer? I'm not even sure what they would be looking for at this point.

Thanks in advance and I'll post my results when I get them on Tuesday (hopefully)
