Low Ferritin at -3
Mar 27, 2009
I have been feeling very poor for about a week now, was turned away from giving blood through red cross first time in my adult female life at 11.5. The iron level is usually around 13.

My doctor ordered a lab test, CBC, iron, and something else.

my B12 is high, folate high but ferritin is -3

I am 55, female and post mennapausal for 15 years.
Also have had low thyroid but only on .125 mg levoxyl for 15 years.

Not sure why this is happening, my doctor has now ordered a colonostomy and an egb test.

Can you shed any light on all this?
Hell and Welcome! although I'm sorry you have had to join us :(

Your story sounds similar to mine. I tried to give blood July 3 but was denied because my iron levels were too low. Ironically I donated in February and May and both times my iron was low on the first finger prick but acceptable on the second test on the other finger. Netiher of the nurses there made a big deal out of it and now that I think of it I'm a little angry they didn't. Anyway I saw my PCP on July 23 for a follow-up, he ordered bloodwork and a few days later his assistant told me "you have some abnormal levels that indicate an iron deficiency and you need to see your GI Doc. When I asked why she said since you are not having any vaginal bleeding perhaps you have a GI bleed or a malabsorption problem." I'm 58 and like you postmenopausal so heay periods are not the cause of losing blood. My ferritin was a 5 and hemoglobin was an 11.1, and B12 was good at 857.

Thus began the long path to figuring out what was causing the low iron levels. I had to have a colonoscopy which fortunately was negative, then a capusle endoscopy to see the small intestine which is not seen in the c'scope or upper endoscopy. My GI doc didn't do another upper scope because I had just had one in March 08. She did run a celiac panel blood test which also was negative. So then it was off to see a hematologist on a Thursday in November. She did more bloodwork and scared the daylights out of me calling me on a Saturday morning (what doctor ever calls you on a Saturday?!?!?!? I had myself dead and buried as soon as she told me who she was!!!!) telling me she was calling in an iron supplement prescription for me.
So I started the iron pills and had a follow-up a month later and my ferritin went up to a 12. My next follow-up is April 15 and I am very anxious to see some progress but from what others have experienced it is a slow process.

So to make a long story short...I am no closer to any answers as to what caused this and when it will be "better".

I wish you well as you begin your journey and I hope that your c'scope is normal.

Take Care!
i am very anxious as have had low ferritin for the past twelve months at least? (or more its just it was tested a year ago). it was 6 last year and i went on oral iron, seemed to pick up for a few months, stopped my iron and low and behold less than a year later i am now 4???? i am scared as i do have heavy periods but i didnt think so heavy to do this? i am 46 and at that age i know but will i ever get better?? i am taking iron again and too scared to come off it? it seems to be such a slow process feeling better, i want the doctor to do another blood test for low b12? that has not been checked but throid, liver etc, all have and fine? i am either way too hot, (and go dizzy when really hot) or cold like now and i tingle all up and down my back and arms?? does anyone else suffer with similar symptoms?
