Hell and Welcome! although I'm sorry you have had to join us :(

Your story sounds similar to mine. I tried to give blood July 3 but was denied because my iron levels were too low. Ironically I donated in February and May and both times my iron was low on the first finger prick but acceptable on the second test on the other finger. Netiher of the nurses there made a big deal out of it and now that I think of it I'm a little angry they didn't. Anyway I saw my PCP on July 23 for a follow-up, he ordered bloodwork and a few days later his assistant told me "you have some abnormal levels that indicate an iron deficiency and you need to see your GI Doc. When I asked why she said since you are not having any vaginal bleeding perhaps you have a GI bleed or a malabsorption problem." I'm 58 and like you postmenopausal so heay periods are not the cause of losing blood. My ferritin was a 5 and hemoglobin was an 11.1, and B12 was good at 857.

Thus began the long path to figuring out what was causing the low iron levels. I had to have a colonoscopy which fortunately was negative, then a capusle endoscopy to see the small intestine which is not seen in the c'scope or upper endoscopy. My GI doc didn't do another upper scope because I had just had one in March 08. She did run a celiac panel blood test which also was negative. So then it was off to see a hematologist on a Thursday in November. She did more bloodwork and scared the daylights out of me calling me on a Saturday morning (what doctor ever calls you on a Saturday?!?!?!? I had myself dead and buried as soon as she told me who she was!!!!) telling me she was calling in an iron supplement prescription for me.
So I started the iron pills and had a follow-up a month later and my ferritin went up to a 12. My next follow-up is April 15 and I am very anxious to see some progress but from what others have experienced it is a slow process.

So to make a long story short...I am no closer to any answers as to what caused this and when it will be "better".

I wish you well as you begin your journey and I hope that your c'scope is normal.

Take Care!
