Welcome to the boards!

Is he a vegetarian? A low ferritin is related to low iron intake or blood loss as menstrual cycles in women. It is also common for children because they are growing quickly (growth spurts) to be anemic, but your son's Hgb is normal. Supplementing iron is the only way along with an iron rich diet, or IV iron to raise the Ferritin and should be done with a doctor's script and regular blood checks at least X3 months. You said, his B-12 was normal, I am curious what his lab range and values were. They may be too low and therefore having symptoms. Doctor's say they are normal if they are in range but some things can still cause symptoms. FLFG
