Does this seem OK?
Apr 21, 2009
My most recent lab results seem rather puzzling. They show a rise in hemoglobin, putting me at the low end of the normal range (12.1), with hematocrit at 0.37...sounds good, doesn't it.... ...and serum iron *8 (9-30) umol/L , the fraction saturated at *0.13 (0.20-0.55).

I wonder how the apparent increase in hemoglobin and hematocrit is even possible - I am on no iron supplements, and have had to reduce my protein (including meat) and potassium consumption. So, I've been eating even less meat than before, and, as usual, staying away from all red meat for better cholesterol control. Unfortunately, thanks to diet and medication, my cholesterol levels are now too low. :(

Ferritin is an acute phase reactant. It and other inflammatory markers accompany both acute and chronic inflammatory states, so common in chronic kidney disease. For this reason, ferritin is not a reliable indicator of iron stores in individuals with CKD and was not tested. These numbers leave me wondering where I stand as far as my iron - is my anemia gone? Does it simply just go away? Why are some of my levels below normal range, and some normal?
