Johanmi--Welcome to the boards!

Sorry to hear you are joining the Club!!!:round:

You are correct, you are serious/severely anemic with a 6.8 Hgb and a 20 Hct. Can I ask your age? I am curious for different reasons. Just to let you know an optimal target for Hgb for females is 14.0 and Hct is 42% so you can see the difference. These numbers will now be your new goal, not just to reach the charts again. And..... also, know that your labs will be thrown off whack as well, when one thing is out of range when anemia presents, many other things follow. So don't be alarmed by that. It scares many people when they see this. I cannot believe your numbers, they are really low. A ferritin of 2 means you have no iron stores, they are depleted, which in turn causes the anemia to develop. So, you basically have a negative iron balance. I am curious also what your MCV might be? It can take years for the ferritin to deplete it's stores so this must have been going on for a long time, this will also be reflected in your MCV. The longer it goes on the lower the number here. I am really sorry that you have to go through this. I hope your symptoms are not too bad. I am surprised that they did not give you a blood transfusion when you were in the ER. Some doctors would have and others may send you for the IV iron. I can tell you this much Slowfe is a very low dose iron AND YOU ARE NOT TAKING ENOUGH IN FOR YOUR NUMBERS, KNOW THIS. It is also a slow release iron which = LOW absorption rate. You really need to ask your next doctor, GYN to seriously give you a prescription for HIGH does iron. You are not on near enough. I don't know what you have been reading here because I have not been around, but you need to take a lot more iron. It can take up to a year or more to replete your iron stores depending on your particular cause of anemia. I had a 8.5 Hgb and 2 ferritin and was prescribed Poly Iron 150 2X daily at 300 mg's of elemental iron for 1 yr and then 150 for the remainder of my life, as long as I take PPI's like Nexium. Correct me if I am wrong, and I hope I am, but it seems like you are taking at the most 100 mgs daily, according to your post, that is not even half of what you need. I am just a dumb patient and this is MHO. I am just giving you a heads up on the hard facts. Things that I learned the hard way. You need more help from your doctors to get you where you need to be. Do you mind sharing your B-12 number? I hope I have given you some helpful information. Good luck to you with your GYN appointment on Monday. There can also be more than one reason for anemia. I had an ablation and at the time of my procedure they found 7 polyps which is a cause of heavy bleeding as you may know. This did not show up on my trans vaginal ultrasound so you know. Take care and keep us posted. FLFG :)
