It can take months and if you are still getting your period, you may never reach the optimum ferritin level of 70. The last thing to be effected is your hgb, hct. Your RDW will increase as your ferritn level goes down. Now for me I know when my platelets goes up beyond 325 and my RBC goes down I know that my ferritin is going down. This is my pattern I have noticed over the years of dealing with low iron.
Even if you are just taking the over the counter iron, you really need to have your ferritin checked on a regular basis. Your hgb is the last thing to go down, that is when most pcp will say that you are anemic, but by that time you will pretty much feel the symptoms of anemia.
I would suggest that you start requesting copies of all blood work that our have done. You have to take your health into your own hands. You know your body better than any doctor.
