Anemia Insomnia
Oct 26, 2010
Hello,

I've been searching this anemia board for days now but I can't find any specific post on dealing with insomnia caused from anemia. When I was first diagnosed a few weeks ago I begin supplementing with Floradix and eating lots of high iron foods and my sleeping begin to improve. Previously I was either not able to fall asleep at all or I would wake up at 4:00 in the morning and not be able to fall back asleep. But now, even though I am eating my iron foods and still taking the Floradix, I am not sleeping at all. This has gone on for 2 weeks now and once again .. I am off work and all the symptoms which had vanished, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, heart palpitations, are all back.
I guess I'm just asking how you deal with the insomnia? I don't want to take prescription sleeping pills. I've used them in the past and you wake up sick and feeling strange all day. What has worked for you? They want to put me on anti-depressants. I'm NOT depressed, I'm tired and frustrated!!

Tired and frustrated. Know *exactly* what you mean. Poor sleep is one of the biggest issues I'm experiencing with anemia. I do take sleeping pills, and they don't help much, so I can't say I'd recommend trying them.

elaina 08,

I too have been struggling with exactly the same thing. I was diagnosed with anemia 10 days ago, after struggling with the symptoms and not knowing what was wrong with me for over 2 years. Every health professional that I went to said I was suffering from anxiety/panic disorder. As of about 5 months ago, my insomnia became so bad that I would cry myself to sleep from fear and exhaustion. Only to get maybe an hour or two at the most of intermittent sleep. My heart would race, pound, flutter and my palpitations scared the life out of me. They were around the clock, but it was so much worse at night. Finally a new doctor checked my blood work and my ferritin levels were 10. I am on 3 divided doses of ferrous sulphate and eating every iron rich food in sight. My symptoms are better, but the insomnia is still a battleground. I wish I had some advice for you, but wanted to let you know that you are not alone... hopefully somebody out there can give us some help. Good luck to you and your struggles, positive thinking your way!

My ferritin is 13, iron saturation 18%, RBC 3.7......but my doctor is saying everything is fine. I too am unable to sleep.....I am exhausted every morning, it takes hours for me to finally get motivated to anything.

wow I didn't know anyone had replied to my post! I wish you all weren't dealing with this but it's nice to know I'm not alone.

An update, my sleep was gradually getting better and I was beginning to not feel so whipped until I went away for 2 weeks after Christmas to visit my fiance's family.

I came home and immediately started a very heavy period and for the past week I haven't been sleeping again. I have pounding headaches everyday and very bad heart palpitations. I'm eating iron foods by the loads and still am taking my iron supps like I have been for the past months. But it's not helping. Last night I maybe got 4 hours of sleep. Maybe. And I have a looong, busy day ahead. To top it off my hairdresser made a comment along the lines of 'my goodness, your hair is so thin!'. Makes me just want to cry :(

Btw, I am taking a herbal iron supp with other vitamins/minerals in it. It is 45mg. When I get my period I have been taking my doc prescribed one of 150mg. I alternate the days with that one because it causes MAJOR constipation, something I already struggle with because of IBS.

I really believe with iron deficiency that our hormones are crazy out of whack. I have weird, eczema type acne by my mouth that never goes away and I've heard this type is caused by messed hormones. I have heard good and bad things about progesterone cream so I haven't tried it yet. Cal/Mg is good for hormones ? Hmmm...

regnissie- your ferritin levels are low. So are mine. Hair cannot re-grow until it hits 70 for 3 months.
