Low B12
Dec 11, 2010
I was diagnosed with anemia last August. I've been on ferrous sulfate since. My most recent bloodwork showed my Hematocrit and Hemoglobin in the normal range. That is good. However, my Neurologist had ordered bloodwork for something else and discovered I had low B12. He recommended weekly B12 injections for a month, every other week for a month, then once a month. He offered to give me the shots, but he also recommended I see my Primary Care doctor for them since that wasn't why I was there to see him. I went to see my PCP and he felt that why my B12 was low it didn't warrant shots. He offered to do the shots every other week for a month then monthly if I wanted.

It is confusing when doctors recommend conflicting treatments. Will I receive the same kind of benefit going with my PCP's recommendation and fewer shots? Should I ingore my PCP and go back to the Neurologist for more shots when I no longer need other treatment with him? My dad has had some severe anemia and B12 issues and I worry about eventually getting to that point.

Thanks,
