Unless you know for certain your anemia is due to low iron levels, taking iron supplements can be harmful. It would be hard to say if that is the case without knowing your ferritin, TIBC, UIBC, and iron serum/sat levels were from a CBC.

Normally, the body is good at regulating from iron poisoning, but in some people that mechanism is turned off and iron accumulates to toxic levels. The condition is called hemochromatosis. If you don't have that condition, excess iron is rejected several places along the digestive tract and is expelled. However, even without the condition, your body can only do so much and if it isn't expelled it will build up and become destructive.

However, John is mostly right, a supplement won't hurt much [if you don't have hemochromatosis]. Just don't overdo it.
