Re: New to anemia

rube; I looked up liver damage and iron supplements and it looks like you can experience liver damage if your body is overloaded on too much iron. That's why I think it's important that those of us with severe low levels see a hemotologist for recommended amounts of iron based on our levels and keep monitoring our levels and doses of iron. This is why you'll never see me telling anyone that they should take this many milagrams of iron... I think that's the doctor's job. I did tell someone recently that I thought based on their severe low levels that their regular MD doesn't know what they're doing because they only prescribed 50 mg a day and their levels aren't going up after years and years... and that that person really needs to see a specialist...

I am thinking that when my levels get up to where they should be, my hemotologist will cut my 1000mg/day dose down and get me to a 'maintenance' level with whatever those milagrams might be. I mean, if my levels got to a safe zone and she kept me on 1000mg/day, that wouldn't seem right - yeah, then I would think after a period of time, I could be doing damage to my liver... I'd certainly question that and again, I would assume that my iron dose will go down as my levels get safe again.

Just my thoughts on your comment...
