I have suffered from perpetual fatigue for quite some time now. I am male and 21. I presumed it was down to an iron deficiency. I booked a blood/thyroid/glucose test to get to the bottom of my fatigue.

In the meantime, I figured I would take some iron supplements to see how they affected me (only 14mg per day with some vitamin C). I did find that, after taking these, I felt more energetic, more focused, confident, etc.

However, I was surprised to discover that my iron levels are completely normal, as with the other tests.

I want to take the iron supplements again because of the effect I found them to have. However, if I have normal iron levels, I wouldn't want to cause any problems.

Did the iron supplements have a placebo effect? Or do they have the potential to improve fatigue, even if iron levels are normal?

the question is how normal was "normal".

you could have been at the low end/borderline "normal".

the other thing is if they only checked serum iron, that's not a lot of info.

were hemoglobin and MCV/MCH checked?

and ferritin? or perhaps soluble transferrin receptor?

so, let us know the exact numbers.

OTOH, it could easily be a placebo effect because 14mg is not a lot of iron unless it is some very well absorbed version (heme iron, chelated iron... and the included vitamin C does help!).

another note is I noticed you're male.. so if you really have problems with iron and your diet is normal then you could have some undiscovered problem unless you can account for blood loss
