Re: Sleep/Achy
Jul 26, 2011
rube: Hi! I haven't chatted with you since before my surgery I think. I had to go off of my iron before my surgery (June 6, so 7 weeks ago) and stay off of it for a week or 2 after because having a full abdominal hysterectomy messes up your bowels for a while and iron will constipate you. My doctor told me that I shouldn't need 3/day anymore, should be able to go down to 1/day, but if I got tired and symptoms returned, up it to 2/day. That's just what happened - I was surprised that I started getting symptoms back so quickly but I started tossing and turning at night again (hard to do when you're recovering from major abdominal surgery), waking up unsettled, and the aches that I had before that were minimized became amplified again. I was also getting a bit fatigued again in the afternoons. So I now take 2/day again, and I started taking the prenatal vitamin again that the first doctor I saw put me on. When I take the iron 2X/day and take the prenatal vitamin - I sleep HARD like a ROCK.

I've got other things that are confusing matters for me since I had to have a hysterectomy I'm now going into early, surgical menopause, so I'm not sure if the fatigue part is that I need to begin taking the hormones (I was waiting for hot flashes or weepiness to occur) or if I need more iron:dizzy: But at least I've got the sound sleep part under control!

Why did your levels get low in the first place? Was there a reason? Did they find the cause? Someone once said on this forum "Anemia is a symptom, not a disease" and that is so true - it's got to be caused by something. So unless they've found your cause and fixed it, I would think it would make sense that your body isn't going to maintain it's normal levels without the help of the iron.

Hope you get your good sleep back soon

Michelle
