Hello, I am a 20 yr old female who is extremely confused about the cause of my hypochromic microcytic anemia and the test results I have gotten back thus far, I am hoping someone has had a similar experience and can help. I am very petite (5'2" under 105 lbs) and in otherwise very good health and in good shape. I found out over the weekend that I am severely anemic. My Hgb level was an 8.8. I asked the doctor to also run serum ferratin, which was very low, just not sure the number. I have no blood loss, I have been on a birth control that keeps me from having periods for about a year and a half. I have the following symptoms: fatigue, bruising easily, always very cold, always very shaky, headaches, joint aches, muscle cramps, high heart rate, palpitations with exertion (even just going up a flight of stairs), dry skin, brittle hair with more loss than usual, dry and flaky nails, I've almost fainted several times in the last year, restless leg or RLS-like feelings in my feet, I like to chew on ice, I've occasionally had blurry vision with my contact lenses in, occasional chest pains, and I'm sure theres a few more but it's really hard to list them! I have had several of these symptoms as long as I can remember, at least back to the age of 10, several years before I hit puberty, so I am assuming this is a chronic thing. I never really thought to go to the doctor because I thought it was just how my body worked, until more symptoms developed. So my Hgb and serum ferratin would indicate iron-deficiency anemia, but I eat plenty of meat and I'm thinking this has been going on most of my life. Also, my RBC level has been normal to high, not low as is usually seen with iron-deficiency. In addition, my basophil% and basophil abs is high in all my blood work, which is very unusual from what I can tell, but I am not sure if that is related. My Hct, MCV, MCH, and my MCHC are all low, and my RDW CV is high. My doctor is also waiting for the results of transferrin and at least one or two other iron studies and wants me to come in after that for some more tests including thyroid function. He also said they did a test to see if my bone marrow was producing RBC's and that test was fine. From what I've researched, some of my test results are conflicting, or there could be an underlying cause to my iron-deficiency? If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. Waiting for all these tests is killing me!
