Re: Ferritin levels
Jan 12, 2012
Hi! I'm relatively new as well. My ferritin levels were at one time as low as yours were. I've actually had two incidences of low ferritin in the last five years. The first time was because I had changed multi-vitamins not realizing that the new ones didn't have iron, and evidently I needed that iron! The second time (and what I am going through now) is due to a medication I am taking for another condition. I am on the ferrous sulfate tablets twice daily, and have managed to get up to 24 with my ferritin. I was up to 49 and stopped the tablets because I thought I was finally in good shape with quitting the meds that caused the ferritin problem, but my ferritin quickly went back into the 20's :(((. My doc told me that mine needed to be between 50-70 to alleviate my symptoms (fatigue, coldness, hair falling out). I'm not sure about the hemoglobin, as they haven't mentioned mine was a problem. Did they talk to you about taking the iron on an empty stomach, with orange juice or other vitamin c source, and limiting caffeine?? It takes time. I know the first time this happened it took me several months (about 5 or 6) to finally get it back up to the 40's from a low of 8 or 9. I wish you the best!

hi im new to this forum.
My ferritin was 9 and i've been on 3x100mg iron per day for 3 months but it s still only 22. I am so exhausted, but the colon specialist said yesterday that level would nt make me tired as my haemoglobin is 13.6. I m 44, what should be my level for my age? It's prob caused my heavy periods they said but doing colonoscopy to check. Replies would be great.
Hi all!
My blood work came back that i was Moderate Microcytic Anemia due to heavy periods, I have a fibroid. My ferritin level in December 2011 was 15. The lab said the normal range is 8 -200 somethng. My hemoglobin was 8 in september then went up to 10, because i was taking iron but i stopped cause it made me sick, Anway the doctor who ordered the labs in december was a free clinic doctor, so he really doesnt give a damn and said nothing about my numbers. I walk around some days, tired, weak, dizzy and lightheaded, you name it! I cant wait to get insurance.... This doc told me that a ferritin level of 15 is not bad, THATS HARD TO BELIEVE after looking at the range! Can a ferritin of 15 make you feel bad? Its probably lower now, because im still bleeding heavy once a month, ugh

Hi guys. This is my first post. I need some help. I have restless legs so I am very familiar with that type of pain. But for about the last 8 months, I have been having leg pain that is constant and won't go away. My blood work in Oct 2011 said I had a ferritin level of 4, iron 31, hemoglobin of 10.9 so my dr put me on iron but never really addressed the ferritin levels. Now I have constant pain in my legs. I am also in pain all over my body. I am 50 years old and feel like I am 10 yrs older. What type of dr should I see? I had my primary doc run new blood work and she says my hemoglobin was better(because I take iron) but my Vit d levels were down. So now I am on prescription Vit D. Can lack of Vit d cause leg pain? I need HELP!

A ferritin level of 4 is TOO LOW!!! You need to see a Hematologist ASAP!!!! That is a specialist that deal with bloods disorders. My ferrintin is 8, and they mailed my results yesterday and my abnormal test is my Ferritin! My hemoglobin is a 9.2, i am anemic. They told me to immediately start taking 325mg of ferrous sulfate, 3 times a day. And to see a Hematologist. I bleed heavy every month due to fibroids. So Im definatley going to get that taken care of. I am 31 and I feel weak, dizzy and lightheaded some days. I even have brain fog where I cant think clearly all symptoms of Iron defiency. I even had chest pains back in August, September of 2011, these weird pains. But they went away as my numbers went up. But I stopped taking the iron and my numbers went back down and now im here feeling like crap! Now im back on my iron meds and i will stay on them, im tired of feeling like this
Ferriti is a four too my doctor said it was nothing to worry bout since my hemoglobin is still pretty high he did put nee on the iron pill twice a day.....can just a low ferritin kill you or would it have to depkete your hemoglobin first.......I am lightheaded dizzy like on a rocky boat I sometimes feel short if breath heart flutters I have a mitral valve prolapse though so don't know which is causing it my feet get really cold my heart races at times I just don't want to due I have there kids and one on the way I just started iron pills Saturday my legends were check in December I just never started pills took Satur

If your ferritin was fine, then he would have never put you on Iron 2wice a day. Regular docs, dont know everything. For example, My first doctor told me to go to a hematologist asap, he was correct!. But when I lost my insurance and had to go to a free clinic, this other dumb doctor, told me that my ferritin of 15 was fine back in Jan 2012. Now Ive dropped to an 8!!! and this new doc told me that 15 was too low and caused a lot of symptoms!!! and now my new number came back a 8, they are really worried. Ive had ER doctors tell me i was fine.... how am i fine, but the ideal number for ferritin is over 60?? You need to see a hematologist. YOu can die if you have no iron in your body at all, and that takes years. So by the time you get that low, the sypmtoms of anemia and lack of oxygen in your blood will start affecting other parts of your body... then it only gets worse from there, but that takes time.
A ferritin level of 4 is a problem. Mine is 5 right now. My H&H are low, but not critical. My doctor insists that a ferritin level that low indicates a source of bleeding that must be found. (I am a nurse, and asked another doctor I work with for his opinion, and he agreed with this). The EGD and colonoscopy were negative. The only other possibility my GI doc can think of is small intestine bleeding which will be a capsule endoscopy. She is taking her sweet time and getting this ordered. Anwhaley...you need to find the source of the problem, and make sure you take your prenatal vitamins and get regular check ups during your pregnancy.
Do you think my ferririn could be low from when I had my baby two years ago and my hem dropped to a 6.8 and maybe my body used the stored ferritin and I just never built it back up
