I am a 59 year old female and just found out my iron is low--30. Dr says it should be 40 to 175. 10 months ago it was 142. I've been a near-vegetarian for 6 months so I'm thinking it's probably a dietary thing, though I do eat all the non-meat foods that are high in iron. I am not anemic thugh so does that mean my iron just isn't low enough yet to cause anemia?

I am supposed to take iron pills for 3 months and then be retested.

I asked for the blood test because of 5 weeks of extreme itching and then irritability. At first we thought it was an antibiotic I was on , then other meds. It was trial and error. I finally figured it was probably my thyroid hormones out of whack (I have no thyroid gland and am on synthroid) or lack of B12 or iron.
