My 19 year old niece has been anemic for at least 3 years. I don't know all the details, but even on iron she has trouble keeping her iron levels in the double digits. Yet, she has been to 2 doctors and neither has really ran any tests to find out why she is anemic. She is going to be spending the summer with me and I want to help her find some relief. Plus, I always thought that anemia was a symptom of something else, am I wrong? I am having her bring her medical records with her, but where do I go from there. Do I start with a family doctor, or a hematologist, or ???????

It is really sad to see how this has effected this little girl. As a high school girl she had to drop out of all physical activities. Last year she had to drop out of beauty school. She goes days without sleep and yet is so tired. She looks pale and we went down town one day and I visibly saw her "crash". I didn't know if she was going to be able to make it back to the car. So please any help will be appreciated.
Hello Peaches. You are right, anemia is a symptom of something else. In order to fix the anemia you have to find what is causing it. She is lucky to have someone that is so concerned about her.

I would say start with a family Dr. hopefully you don't have to shop around for one before you find one that cares. The family Dr. can run the tests and go from there, refer you to a hematologist. etc. I have read some stories about Dr's and I just don't understand why they don't take it more serious and are so quick to brush it off as something else.
