I am grateful to have found this board. For years, I asked for CBCs because I had all the symptoms of anemia. My doctor checked my hemoglobin and hematocrit but not my ferritin levels. Finally, I thought it might be my thyroid. I saw an endocrinologist in May or so, and he tested my blood for a LOT of problems. Turns out, my ferritin level was 7.

He told me to take 325 mg of iron 2 x day and to follow up with him. My thyroid, hemoglobin, B12, and hematocrit were all "normal."

I switched from the 325 mg of ferrous sulfate to the much kinder-on-my-system Proferrin and ferrous bisoglyc-something (sp??).

I went back to my primary doc. She tested my blood and then did not review the test for weeks. After my 3 emails and one phone call, she reviewed it. I found out today my ferritin is at 49, which the lab delcares "normal."

However, I feel like heck. I am exhausted! And it sounds like some here are saying ferritin levels really need to be at 60 or 70 to feel good again.

The problem is that my doc may follow the lab guidelines that 49 is "normal."

Here are some CBC results:
WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT 3.8 3.8-10.8 Thousand/uL
RED BLOOD CELL COUNT 4.24 3.80-5.10 Million/uL
HEMOGLOBIN 13.8 11.7-15.5 g/dL
HEMATOCRIT 40.1 35.0-45.0 %

And the most recent Ferritin results:
FERRITIN 49 10-232 ng/mL

What is my next step here? I am sad at all I have not been able to due to this undiagnosed problem, and I am concerned my primary doc might not take my problems seriously since the lab declares my ferritin as normal. She also tested my B12, did the CBC, and that is all normal too.

Would a hematologist be able to help? Should I just keep taking iron to get my ferritin levels up above 70?
