Hello everyone,

I was diagnosed with severe anemia a couple of weeks ago (my hemoglobin was 7.1 and my ferritin level was a 1). My doctor was especially concerned because 11 months prior to being diagnosed my hemoglobin was over 13 and my ferritin level was 180. I do not have heavy periods to explain this and my fecal occult samples came out negative. My hemocrit and RDW values were indicative of iron deficiency anemia as stated by my doctor. So, she immediately put me on Slow Fe 325mg pills 3 times a day. I started feeling better within a couple of days and when I went to go see the hematologist that she referred me to only a week and a half later the blood test they did revealed my hemoglobin was now up to 10.1 and my ferritin was 93? I didn't find out the results until recently so haven't had a chance to ask the doctor about it yet, but is that abnormally fast improvement or could it just be my body is efficient at iron absorption? From what I've read on this forum it seems like iron tablets tend to take months and months to build up hemoglobin, much less that much ferritin. Should I be concerned with how quickly my levels have gone up?

Also, my other question is, while my doctor seemed to think that gastrointestinal bleeding must be the cause of my anemia, that now doesn't seem to be the case. Could that severe of anemia have been caused by having disordered eating and overexercising this past year? I had been stressed out and barely ate (losing about 15 pounds in the process) and also would do intense exercise nearly every day.

Anyway, any input on my situation would be much appreciated. I can't find a lot of information involving people in the same kind of situation. Thanks!
