I had gastric bypass surgery 11 years ago and for the past year or so my iron levels have been low including ferritin, which now is less than 3. I also have high blood sugar (not diabetes) for which I see an endocrinologist, who put me on Januvia and Metformin to keep it from going too high. She recommended I see a hematologist and I had my first of four IV Iron Infusions last Thursday. Within that same first night, my hands and feet, which are always ice cold, started feeling warmer. I can't remember the last time I had warm hands. No matter where we went, I was always wearing a sweater and now, I seem to tolerate air conditioning much better. I have 3 infusions the following next three Thursdays. I was very worried when the doctor said it was Infed. They gave me 2 tylenols and a drip bag of Benedryl. Then I recieved the test dose and it went excellent. The nurse there was wonderful and I hope to have her each time. They also did bloodwork prior to the infusions and I will have bloodwork done a few weeks after the last one. I knew that gastric bypass patients have to take vitamins, B12, Iron and Vitamin D forever, however, I had no idea I would need these infusions.
