The iron and B12, although both important for red blood cell production, are two completely different things. Her Dr is right to question why her iron is so low. It may be from dietary insufficiency, poor absorption in the GI tract, or chronic hidden blood loss, like from the GI tract. Blood loss from GI tract can be serious, so that needs to be ruled out. Both iron replacement and Vit B12 supplementation will be needed to restore her blood count to normal. An iron level of 3 is quite low. I think the Vit B12 once a week will be ok, while the cause of low iron is investigated. The levels of B12 for men and women are the same, so hers is quite low. Do you know her hemoglobin or hematocrit levels, which show how anemic she is? They are both part of the complete blood count. Does she have any known GI problems such as celiac disease that may be hindering iron absorption? Vit C helps iron be absorbed, so it is good to take Vit C, like 500mg, along with the iron.
