My ferritin dropped to a 4 in August. The doctor told me to take the supplements twice a day and they re-tested me in 8 weeks. I had issues with the supplements and just took them once a day, but I had some good increase after the 8 weeks. It was still low, but closer to normal. If there hadn't been an increase, I would have received a referral to a hematologist.

I think the most important thing that I had to learn was figuring out what is causing the anemia. In my case, it was determined that I had 2 factors that are causing me issues with absorption. I've been told I will likely need the iron supplementation for life. :( At least I know what I'm dealing with though.

I've had discussions with my doctors about the 'side effects' I've had from the iron supplements. (I didn't have the 'side effects' on the supplements several years ago. I guess bodies can change.) We decided to do some infusions and I had my first 2 this month and my last labs were good. I'll be monitored monthly to see how frequently I need them. I'm still trying to determine if the 'side effects' will dissipate.

I wish you well in getting your levels up.
