I have been anemic for years. The last time before the most recent labs showed my iron at a 10. Had all the tests, upper endo, colonoscopy etc..... Everything was negative. So nothing was ever done. Last month I went to the doctor because of depression and I had noticed that I was getting out of breath and had heart palpitations very easily. Heart problems run in my family. So doc sent me for labs. Got a frantic phone call the next day to get to the office immediately. So I did. My hemoglobin was 6.5. He said I was pretty close to having a heart attack. He wanted me to go immediately to the hospital for a blood transfusion. After consulting another doctor, he then sent me to a blood specialist who set me up with five iron transfusions. Now, we just wait and see what happens. He said that I should not even feel like getting out ofbed every day. But because I had been anemic for so long my body adjusted to the low iron. My last lab showed that I was up to 8.5. I amazingly, feel so much better. Weird, I didn't even realize I was feeling bad.
My question is should I expect to have to go through these treatments regularly, because they made me feel pretty crappy at first?
