Mma and ferritin
Nov 11, 2008
... lola56--It looks like your MMA is elevated although I think that some other things can also cause this. This would be for your doctor to decide. I think that if it correlates with a low B-12 serum then it is probably a B-12 deficiency. Yes, your ferritin is low, and as Hoppy stated, it should be at least 50 to feel healthy and 70-100 to be optimal, which is the goal... (5 replies)
... will I show symptoms of anemia with a ferritin level of 14? The rest of my blood numbers came back good (4.3 for RBC and 6.3 for WBC and 13.1 HGB). I have headaches, fatigue, hair loss, brittle nails, dizziness, lack of concentration, off balance, and pain in my neck. My Dr. wants me to see a neurologist because she says it is not iron def.. I don't agree. Is 14 low for... (17 replies)

... Audrey-B--Okay, it took you 2 years to reach 61-59, so we are about the same I would say. In the end we may find out that it is the same reason as well. I was on 2 iron daily for a year and my Hgb finally reached optimal levels. This is when they cut the iron to 1 and I still needed 2, I know that now but it has been since January that I have been taking 1. I have... (11 replies)

Anaemia symptons??
May 28, 2008
... Recently I was told that my B12 was low. The range on the blood test said 200-1100. My B12 was 180 which is just slightly off the low end. Is it that bad?? I am not B-12 deficient myself. I can tell you that a friend of mine is B-12 def. and also has IDA. She has many of the same symptoms as I do even after her IDA is in check and her B-12 is somewhere around 500 now, but... ... It would be normal if your are IDA and B-12 def at the same time which is very common. I have a friend that has both and she takes Poly Iron 150 1 X daily and B-12 shots and sublingual. FLFLOWERGIRL:) (48 replies)
B12?
May 22, 2008
... Melissa--No, B-12 deficiency does not mean that you definitively have PA. Causes of B-12 deficiency can be divided into 3 causes; nutrition deficiency, malabsorption syndromes and gastrointestinal causes. But if it runs in your family that is the key to look for PA because it is an AI disease that can be inherited as Hashimotos can. So that would be key to help in finding a... (5 replies)
... First of all the lab range for ferritin is usually 10-291 or can vary slightly. My Hematologist thinks that anything above 10 is normal but is **** ** ****! My Ferritin was as low as a 2 and I didn't feel a thing. After I was there for a while up to 9 for 6 months I began to feel really really bad! When I hit 20 and up I felt a much different body the fatigue was much... (13 replies)

... Yes, do take the iron. I actually felt better when I took the iron on an empty stomach verses with food. I think this is due to the fact that it takes so long for food to digest and the iron sits there longer causing upset. Drink lots of water when you take the supplement and this also gives you a much better chance. This iron is a special iron for people that get GI upset... (48 replies)
... PP--Sounds like your symptoms are from BOTH IDA and B-12 def. And.....no you are not lazy!!! People here share your symptoms and have been told many things. I guess on the bright side, at least you weren't told that you have depression and prescribed anti's. That is the usual DX. It is good that you are getting iron and B-12 levels replaced. I would ask the Hematologist... (3 replies)

B12 and exercise
