... Merimec--what were you experiencing with your vision? I had some eye problems come on just prior to finding the B12 def., and it improved with supplementation. However, I'm now experiencing some other weird stuff and can't determine if it's B12 related or not. cdzhaha--my serum B12 wasn't tested prior to diagnosis, but a just a few years earlier it was in the upper range... ... Macrocytic anemia can be caused by B12 or folate deficiency. You can still have B12 "deficiency" with normal serum readings (either because the US level is set too low, or you might have a "transportation" problem of B12 from serum into tissues/cells where it's used). A few years before my B12 def. was discovered (via methylmalonic acid testing), my MCV was 103, but my... (1 replies)

... I have malabsorption, and yes, I am 18. I just found out this last summer that my low B12 levels were causing my daily migraines, which I've had for the last three years. I started out having a B12 injection every two weeks, but then when my level was even lower, so then I started giving the injection to myself weekly for seven weeks. I've had about a 50% reduction in my... (4 replies)
... With poor malabsorption like that, you might want to make sure her gastro checks her for celiac (wheat/gluten sensitivity). It can cause malabsorption problems due to damage of the intestinal wall (?). There is a test to check for low stomach acid, but don't remember what it's called. You could have her drink a little water mixed with either the juice of a lemon or some... (4 replies)
... Thank you for your reply. My daughter has been on oral iron for two years now and seems to tolerate that well - even though it has not helped her ferritin - so I think she should be able to tolerate a multi-vitamin. What is your condition that you have low B12 and your only 18? How have you treated the B12 deficiency? (4 replies)
... As far as getting the B12 level up it varies from person to person. It's interesting, your daughter is the only one that I've heard of yet that is a teen and has low B12. I am only 18. Your daughter's diet sounds a bit like mine, but I have a lot of dairy products in my diet. I've been to the gastroenterologist, and it did me no good. The severe abdominal pain I was... (4 replies)
Pernicious Anemia?
Sep 15, 2005
... Is MCHC like MCV (Mean Corpuscle Volume)? Mine was high too, indicating B12 or folate def., so docs checked those and they were normal. B12 was "high", but symptoms continued and I got worse. Methylmalonic acid test (can be serum or urine) revealed my B12 deficiency. Homocysteine testing is also sometimes used to Dx B12 problems. I guess sometimes there's a problem with... (9 replies)

... Ferrous sulfate can cause painful joints in some people. If you continue to have pain or be concerned talk to your doctor about another form of iron such as Ferrous Gluconate. It is sometimes prescribed for those who do not respond well to Ferrous Sulfate. (1 replies)

It has gotten worse since now I am losing my hair, have itchy skin, sores that do not heal very fast, and... (3 replies)
... I'm not sure, but I think it takes a little longer for the red blood cells to be replaced. I also remember reading that when "repairs" are being made from B12 deficiency state, the body draws on its supply of iron and potassium. In my case, anyway, I know my potassium needs have increased as I recover from B12 def., not sure about my iron--I take a little just in case. ... (3 replies)
