... Does anyone know of any instances where an above normal iron count can cause leg & arm pains? One doc said it was possibly a syndrone of some sort.....don't recall the exact name. I was diagnosed with hemolytic anemia, after ruling out all other causes of anemia. Was treated with 3 chemo drugs. Father died of complications from hemochromotosis, but so far I do not have... ... You need to be tested for hemochromotosis. You can be anemic and have too much iron stored. Many doctors just do a CBC and prescribe iron tablets when they see a deficiency. You are lucky your doctor did a much more indepth panel. Tell him you want to be tested for hemochromotosis. He should be willing based on your recent test. (5 replies)
... I have been giving blood regularly at the Red Cross, and the last time I went in to give whole blood, the nurse was surprised at how high my hematocrit was, and asked if I had a family history of hemochromotosis. It turns out that my aunt has consistently high iron (but has not been specifically tested for hemochromotosis), so I called my doctor and asked for him to check it... (2 replies)
... My mil was a marathon runner and was told to stop doing it until tests came back. She was diagnosed with hemochromotosis. She probably could have gone back to it but I don't think she did. Then again she is almost 80 (2 replies)
... what did the dr say? My MIL has it so when my husband was having his blood work done as he has hemolytic anemia, the dr did a specific test to see if my husband had it. One of our sons went to be tested also to see and it was negative so there must be a specific panel for the hemochromotosis. (7 replies)

Anyway the GI Doc that is treating for this Hemochromotosis said, it is the ferritin that you test first, then iron package. It is my understanding that the overload is in the storage which is ferritin level. ... (11 replies)

... Hey Joplopper......I had the chemo (Vincristine, Ritoxin, & Cytoxin....spelling?) 4years ago. It worked. I was diagnosed with a possible lymphoma, but never confirmed. The chemo turned my immune system off & started it from scratch, which worked. Blood levels all normal now, except for slightly elevated iron. ... I have hemolytic anemia as well, but don't have a high iron count. What's your current hemoglobin count? Is your anemia active right now? The only treatment they've tried so far for my anemia has been low dose Prednisone. How did you fare with the chemo drugs? Could the high iron be an effect from the meds? Jill (6 replies)
