Elevated RDW
Nov 9, 2017
... I had two blood tests about a month and a half ago and was told by the doctor that my counts are "consistent with iron-deficiency anemia". I was told to take iron supplements for a month, then have another blood test (and to continue taking iron for two months after that). I have been taking iron supplements for a little over a month and just got the results from the latest... (0 replies)
RDW is high

... Your MCV must really be low in that case. In anemia all your labs are thrown off being low with the exception of the RDW and Platelets and they are High. This really freaked me out when I first saw my labs, it made me want to cry, also because I felt so bad. ... (2 replies)
How Bad are counts

... You should check (and post) the reference (i.e., normal) ranges from your lab report, which are important to know in evaluating the severity of low blood counts. For example, I have seen RBC reference ranges with low limits of anywhere from 4.0 to 4.7. When I follow these results over time I prefer to look at the percentage a result is below the lower limit in order to smooth... (1 replies)

... I had a lower hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell count about a few weeks ago. Now that has corrected itself it seems based on these labs today a hematologist ran. He was saying based on my previous labs it looked like I could have had an anemia of chronic disease since my MCV was normal as were my iron tests, although my iron saturation was low normal. Anyway, he... (0 replies)

... The good new is my Hgb has gone from 8.2 up to 10.1. I think that the really high RDW could mean that I am still making new cells and the IV iron will improve my counts over the next couple of weeks. I have never had a RDW this high before. ... (7 replies)
... ood work done a couple of weeks ago and got the results back this week. When I compared the results to my blood work from May 08, I noticed that nearly all of my counts have dropped. I've called my doctor but am having a difficult time getting a hold of her to talk about it so I was hoping I could get some input here. ... (1 replies)
... Thanks again for your quick replies. Still waiting for the iron test. I've had two CBCs in a week and both had the same result as far as pattern, but the RBC HGB all HCT went a little lower (the second set of results is the one I originally posted about), and the platelets higher (but not out of control). These are what the first results showed: WBC: 4.9 (3.8-10.8)... (7 replies)
