Hi,
First off just let me say that I'm not trying to start a fight here, but I took Xanax everyday for 7 years and I weaned off of it and I didn't take any anti-seizure medication.
In fact I know three other people who have weaned off benzo's and none of them have taken any kind of anti-seizure medication.
But I guess Doctors are just like we are, no one drug or therapy works for everyone and no two Doctors will handle weaning the same way.

Just don't stop it cold turkey, and don't do it without your Doctor's help.

My Doctor gave me a schedule but to be honest I can't remember how long it took me.
I know that I went very slowly and I had no problems at all.
My Doctor told me it wasn't a race and in fact he told me that by going slowly I would probably be able to wean off easily and I did.

I'm no Doctor but I would imagine that how long it takes you to get off would depend a lot on how much you're taking.
I would think it would take less time to wean off of a 1/4 MG than it would to wean off 1 MG.

I took a very small dose, so in my case it wasn't the amount I was taking that played a part in how long it took me to wean off, but the length of time I was taking it.
Many things can play a part in how long it takes you.

The best advice I can give you is talk to your Doctor about weaning and don't ever try to go it on your own.

My advice was for tshont to cut the Xanax down by 1/4 mg. of whatever dose they are taking each week. Perhaps it is because you took a very small does that you were able to do it yourself. I take 3.0 mg. a day. I have been through withdrawl by trying to do it myself and it was horrible. The flu-like symptoms (aching arms and diarreaha were the worst). I also had a close friend who was on 5.0 mg. a day, she quit herself and had terrible seizures. I looked it up on the internet and it said to take anti-seizure meds first for anyone who is taking 2-3 mg or more, so I was not surprised when I my shrink put me on anti-seizure meds. He wants me off the stuff. It is good advice for tshont to talk to their Doctor about weaning off first. Also, you may want to look it up for yourself on the internet. Good luck to you. :)
