Re: Flying!
Jul 5, 2005
I am the same way, I used to have to fly all the time for work and it never got any easier. No matter how many smooth and wonderful trips I had, I am always terrified for the next. I'm still the same way. I have to fly to mexico from Idaho in November (about 4 hours) and I am SO nervous.

There is nothing wrong with taking a valium when flying if it helps you. Many many many people take tranquilizers to fly, even if they don't have anxiety. I cannot fly without taking Xanax. Well, I probably could but I would be tearing my hair out the whole time :)

Unfortunately if you are an anxious person and a nervous flyer, I don't really think you can ever get rid of the anxiety you have before flying. I just try to do whatever I can to be healthy and make myself feel good beforehand. I will not let myself think about the trip until the day of, because for me the anticipation is usually far worse than the actual flight. I eat well, drink a lot of water, get good sleep and exercise the whole week before. Chatting with a person next to me is also relaxing, especially if you get in a good conversation. If you don't like to chat, a portable CD player with headphones or a mini-dvd player with your fave movie is a godsend. You'll arrive at your destination before you even finish the movie!!

For a short flight like 1.5 hours, a couple rum and diet cokes before or during the flight really help me too :)

Good luck, and do/take whatever you need to make it a pleasant experience. in my opinion its not worth it to make yourself suffer any more than you have to - then you'll always associate flying with that horrible experience.

How do you, as you say, not let yourself think about the trip until the day of the trip? That is my biggest problem. I can never seem to keep my mind off the upcoming trip!
