Hi everyone -

Those of you have used both benzodiazepines and anti-depressants in the treatment of anxiety and panic - in your opinion which works better?

I am constantly back and forth about should i just take one or the other, should I take both? I never know.

My issue with ADs is that I do believe they help make you feel better overall with less frequent anxiety and panic, however I do still have to take Xanax a few times a week as my attacks and nervous stomach never go away completely. Also, I am so scared of the long term effects - of building a tolerance and having to switch, withdrawals, etc. I'm not keen on the idea of being on an AD forever, I guess if I knew i could just take it for a short while and be ok, I would be fine with it, but I know they aren't a cure so doesn't usually work that way.

With Xanax, I really think it is the best treatment for the symptoms I have, it makes me 100% relaxed and I feel the best about it than anything else I have ever taken, including other benzos and ADs. However, my worries about it is that I am going to become too dependent and build tolerance. I don't want to have to up my dose or rely on it every day to survive. I was getting to that point so that's why I went on Effexor, to try to wean off all the Xanax I was taking.

So I guess I just want to hear some different opinions and experiences...what do you think is the best thing to do...take one, take the other, or take both? I know everyone is different, so thats fine.
Hello mjewell, what ssri were you on? I am on 50 mg of Zoloft right now (have been for over a month) and I still feel nervous in certain situations. I did get Klonopin wafers a few months ago and took a .50mg pill once (when I wasnt that nervous) and I feel it didnt do much so I told the doctor maybe an ssri was better. However, maybe I just needed to increase the dosage of Klonopin or take it when I was actually nervous. Anyway, I am feeling the same way as you. I dont know what would be better....I feel a pill that is taken as needed may be good for me since I am not nervous all the time (mainly in new situations like traveling, dating, etc) but I dont want to become addicted and deal with any long term side effects of the benzo. It is good to hear that the Xanax works well for you though....I get the same "nervous" stomach when I have high anxiety which could even cause me to gag which sucks. I just wanna find something that will take that away. Let me know what you think.
