Hi there -

I have been taking Lexapro since end of September and it has totally helped me with my daily Xanax habit. Same as you, I got it because I was worried about having to take Xanax all the time, and it does help. I still have to take Xanax sometimes, but not every day and not two or three on bad days like I used to. Right now i take about 4 a week, but for the first month of Lexapro I went 6 days without even one.

What dosage of Xanax do you take though? I take .5 mgs and I have been told by three differnt doctors that in small doses it really isn't anything to be too concerned about, even if you have to take it daily, so that makes me feel better too.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Right now I'm taking .25 Xanax three times a day. When I first started it I was taking one or two a week. Then one every day or so, and now, because my anxiety is at an all time high, three .25 a day. Even at this dosage I'm getting break-through anxiety, but I refuse to up my dosage more. My anxiety is purely health-related so I'm always worried that there's something wrong with me that the Dr's just can't find. I've had many tests and they all come back as normal as can be, but I just get these symptoms that don't feel right at all. Every symptom I get does seem to be on the list of anxiety symptoms, but I can't convince myself that it's JUST anxiety and nothing else. I'd really like to try the Lexapro but it seems that I've heard so many stories about negative reactions and such that it scares me. Did you have a hard time when you first started it? How long did it take until you felt better? Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated!
Hi,

I'm also taking Lexapro right now and I can tell you that its been great for me! It was a rough start but now after being on 20mg's for one week, I feel great!! Like you, I was taking Xanax .25mg's 2-3 times per day and I still had breakthrough anxiety. All or most of my anxiety is also health related. I've also had all the tests and everything is normal.

When I first started Lexapro it wasn't easy. I put off taking an SSRI for months but now I wish I would have tried it sooner. It did make my anxiety worse for the first week to two weeks but I had extra Xanax to get me through that time. Distraction is the number one key. Keep yourself busy and your mind off your anxiety as much as possible.

Lexapro doesnt make me too tired. I'm still able to do my daily things and take care of my almost two year old. I could never go places before without being completely uncomfortable.

I started taking 5mg's of Lexapro and like I said, I had increased anxiety for the first week or two and some heartburn. Then I went to 10mg's and felt a little better but still not enough. Went to 15mg's for two weeks and then to 20mg's. Ive been on 20mg's for just over a week now and I feel great!

I did things over the weekend that I wouldn't have been able to do two months ago. I still get anxiety but I have my Xanax to take for that. I still take it once a day but am going back to my psychiatrist tomorrow to figure out how to wean off of it. I don't feel like I need it everyday anymore. I still need to work on driving alone (thats my biggest fear because I had a major panic attack on the highway last January and I've been terrified ever since). But the fear isn't as overwhelming anymore.

Also, my health anxiety has reduced. I get pains everyday but I don't obsess over them and no longer think I'm dying everyday.
I now realize what Iv'e been missing out on. I'm beginning to get my life back and it feels great.

I would suggest you try the Lexapro. It doesn't work for everyone, but chances are you'll find something that does work for you. You have to be patient and willing to ride out the initial side effects but they do go away. It gets worse before it gets better for some people, including me. I would do it all over again if I had to though. The benefits have been that great for me.

Even though I'm not feeling 100% better, I'm about 80% better and thats a huge improvement for me. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I found this board to be greatly comforting when I started taking Lexapro. Sometimes just talking to others helped.
Good luck and I hope you're able to give the Lexapro a try! I hope I was able to help you a little!

As Sarah said, some people do have a hard time adjusting to the Lexapro initially. It really differs from person to person so no one can tell you how it will be for you. Myself, I didn't notice a darn thing except that I felt better after about three days. I didn't have ant side effects except a few nights of night sweats. You'll just never know how it affects you until you try it.

As far as the Xanax, You aren't even taking 1 mg a day so don't fret too much about that. They do have a new drug out there called Niravam that is basically a generic version of Xanax XR, so it lasts longer and you don't have to take as much troughout the day.
