Re: Acid Reflux
Feb 7, 2006
hry33 is right, GERD is common. The cause of it is sometimes related to anxiety (stomach spasms which cause the acid to be forced back up into the esophagus, which then can cause esophageal spasms), but there is also at least one other cause: an incompetent sphincter muscle at the top of the stomach. Your case should really be evaluated by your medical doctor or your gastroenterologist. Although the possiblity of esophageal cancer seems to at least cross the minds of those of us with anxiety, it is more likely that you may be experiencing an inflammation of the esophagus known as esophagitis. This though, also must be treated by the right medication or combination of medications and your doctor is the best person to see about the latest information on the subject.
Chronic GERD that isn't treated, or doesn't respond to medication because the wrong medication was used, can eventually produce a pre-cancerous condition known as Barrett's esophagus, but that's if the GERD isn't properly diagnosed and treated effectively. You are right to see your doctor.
