Klonopin or Xanax??
Feb 20, 2007
I generally post on the depression board as depression has been my"primary" disorder. I'm not sure whether it's environmental issues or side effects of the Effexor I've been taking...but the level of anxiety I am experiencing is often intolerable. I take 2MG of Klonopin a day. I feel like I'm taking a placebo. It makes me a bit groggy but doesn't seem to be relieving even 20% of the anxiety. Anyone out there have a better experience with another antianxiety med like XANAX? I have a pdoc appt in two days and want to have some idea as to what to say.

I take xanax for anxiety 1mg as needed it really helps with my anxiety it takes it all away most of the time. But it is not long lasting. Used to take Atavan but that just didn't seem to be strongh enough But it worked longer. So I had my Pdoc put me on Xanax it sure has helped me takes it away pretty quick. But you have to be really careful because it is highly addictive.

Hope this Helps
Thank you Mushroomie. I am leaning toward requesting a switch from Klonopin to Xanax. I noticed that there is now a Xanax XR, which should resolve the problem of the med wearing off too quickly. I have the same problem with Klonopin. It works for about 3 hrs, obviously not long enough to stretch through the day. As far as the addictive problem, that's not a primary concern. What matters to me is feeling and getting better. I'm on Effexor, which is apparently a real monster to quit. I take Adderall, which is certainly addictive.

In my experience the Xanax XR is just not as good as the regular. The regular version allows you more vesatility so that if you are feeling good one day you can drop your dose a little. The XR version also doesn't last all day as advertised, but maybe 12 hours at best. I only got about 8 hours of use out of it. I took it for a month and ended up taking hte regular Xanax again because it just plain works better.

Just food for though,
HI Pianoman, This is a bummer--trying to figure out what is going on. I was prescribed Effexor 37.5 mg and I only took half of a tablet the first day.
That night I was up with rolling panic for 4 hours until it wore off. That was 10 years ago & I keep that bottle to verify what it was as I NEVER want to take that med or any other SSRI again. Granted I am sensitive to many things, but these drugs have side effects that need to be monitored.
I now have good luck controlling my panic and anxiety with deep breathing exercises & taking a natural magnesium. Best wishes to you in your struggle to find relief.
I take 1mg of Xanax a day for GAD - .25 mg in the morning, .25 mg in the afternoon, and .5 mg at night (it helps me sleep which really helps with the insomnia I was experiencing from anxiety). It has truly been a godsend for me. I don't get a 'druggy' or out-of-it feeling on Xanax, just straight-up relief from nearly all the anxiety. Best of all is that on days when I'm not feeling so anxious I can skip doses with no problems. As others have pointed out, though, it can be addictive so you might wanna watch yourself with it.
Try adding a SSRI or Effexor to the benzo

20mg of Celexa, 50mg of Zoloft

A last resort might be Nardil
Benzos (Xanax) is not addictive. See sticky post 1. I just wanted to try and dispell that myth. I am also a firm believer in Xanax and have also had quite a bit of success with it.

Klonopin last a long time in the body but I found that xanax taken as needed is much more effective for anxiety. Don't even bother with the xanax xr because it doesn't work!

Totally agree. I tried the XR and it was pretty much worthless. It lasts less than half as long as advertised and isn't as good as the original.

Thank you all for your responses. I had my pdoc appt yesterday, the 22nd. Amidst several questions, I brought up the Xanax vs Klonopin issue. The pdoc said that Xanax would not be a good fit because of it's short life span etc. saying that I would be going "up and down". Klonopin is supposed to have a much longer life span than Xanax. Although he has been willing to prescribe large doses of Effexor or other meds, he has been very cautious with me regarding Klonopin, keeping me at 2mg a day max. I didn't push the issue but I certainly am curious if a switch would be beneficial. At this point, I don't think he's going to budge.
That is a shame since Effexor causes severe dependency problems as bad or even worse than the Benzo's. It just has no street value like Klonopin. It is really a shame that doctors have to base their decisions regarding your health on fears of law suits. Anyway, you should be OK until you get up close to 4 mg per day as far as the withdrawl is concerned. Even at the dose you are at you will have to wean off the drug over a long period of time to keep from experiencing withdrawl and rebound anxiety. I hear Effexor and Paxil are even worse though.

Good luck,
I was experiencing intense anxiety and sleeplessness and my GP prescribed Xanax. I had a serious "rubber band" effect. I took it at night and during the day my anxiety was even higher. It took me a few days of escalating anxiety to realize what was happening. Klonopin makes me tired and I think it makes me more depressed later but it doesn't give me the rebound anxiety the way Xanax did.
i take .5 mg of klonipin 3x a day. the dr. told me klonipin is a longer lasting pill than zanax. he said zanax helps say for a few hrs, vrs klonipin helps far longer than that.paxil helped w/ my anxiety and depression, but i had no sex drive. in august it will be 2 yrs dealing w/ chronic anxiety! if i don't take my klonipin i have exteme anxiety, very scary, i don't know why. seeing a specialist soon. hope i helped. do you have any advice that can help me figure out why this won't go away. thanks
ARe you still on Paxil?

I took Klonopin for a time and I loved it
I would try a different benzo..Xanax is quicker acting and usually very effective. But,it only lasts around 4 hours,so you do not want to keep taking it all day.I find that .5mg in the morning gets me thru most days.If real tough,I take another .5 in early afternoon.Maybe that would work for you since klonopin is not. They are about the same strength in terms of MG's.
I sure wish I could make mine "go away".I did not get hit until my early 50's..about 7 years ago! Klonopin is a great med.Just use it as directed. You will have plenty of sunny days!
I've been taking 60 mg. of Celexa and 2 mg. of Klonopin for close to 9 years. The combination of these two medications has given me complete relief. I haven't had a panic/anxiety attack since the doctor put me on those 2 meds.
However, my libido was non-existant so I talked to my p-doc about it. He prescribed 300 mg. of Wellbutrin XL and since then my libido has been fine.

I know that different combos of medication effect people differently but that's what has worked for me. I also take 100 mg. of Trazodone for sleep at night and I just recently learned that Trazodone is an anti-depressant, too.

The first 6 months I took Celexa, Klonopin and Trazodone...I felt completely dead on my feet. However, once that 6 month or so period was over I was/am fine. When I began taking Wellbutrin didn't make me hyper or sleepy...the only change that I noticed was the change in my libido.

I hope this helps someone....

You mentioned that you take Adderall, which is a stimulant used for ADD/ADHD. I've heard and read that it by itself can cause anxiety. Have you addressed this with your doctor? Just a thought since it hasn't been brought up. Good luck!
BTW, I've taken both Klonopin and Xanax in the past, and have always had better luck with Klonopin. It lasts much longer and is much better, in my opinion, when dealing with anxiety that lasts a long time.

i had a bad experience with xanax after being on it for 5 yrs.....i was taken off the medicine in 3 days....i had a stroke and haven't been the same since...i went to several doctors after this and my liver showed inflammation and blood pressure went to 180 in one of the stroke...i hope someone will help...doctors do not want to admit they took me off this drug too fast..but the pharmacist can prove it..all i want is to try to get my health back..if it's not too late...anyone have any suggestions?
