I've been taking 1mg Xanax and 2mg Klonopin for about a year now. I really think they are helping me, though, I'm pretty much addicted to them now. I think they are safe for long term use as long as you stay within your prescribed dose and understand stopping the drug will cause withdrawals. As far as I know, I could be on these indefinately.
That is my concern about eve starting them. I think they would help me but am very concerned about their high addiction potential, and withdrawl symptoms upon stopping them. Do you feel "drugged" while on them.

Hi Brando,

I've been a member here for years but don't post very often.

I don't have Panic or Anxiety problems any more, but when I did I took 1 quarter MG of Xanax twice a day every day for 7 years.
My prescription was actually written for 1 quarter MG. 3 times a day, but I never took that many.
In all that time I never took as much as a crumb more, I never felt the need to.
My Dr. told me that just because it said I could take it 3 times a day didn't mean I had to.
He said if less helped me then that's what I should take, but he also told me to never, ever for any reason take more than the prescribed dose.
He said that if at any time I felt like I needed to take more, to stop, NOT take more and call him and we'd wean off the Xanax and he'd find something else for me....but as I said that never happened.

When I knew I didn't need them any more I ( with the help of my Dr. ) weaned off of them with no problems at all.
The key...at least for me...to wean off was to do it very, very slowly.
My Dr. told me it wasn't a race and the slower I went the better it would be.

I don't think anyone can tell you ( not even your Dr. ) with 100% certainety what will or won't work in your case.
I know people who fall on both sides of the debate, some like me who took or still take a benzo for long periods of time without problems and wean off without problems, then there are some who have problems with dependence or tolorance happening fairly quickly.

The best advice I could give you is to talk to your Dr. about your concerns and get his/her input.
If a benzo is the medication your Dr. opts to use in your case just be very sure that if at any time you feel like your dose is no longer working that you talk to your Dr.

Good luck to you:angel:
Hi Brando,

I've had a very similar situation to Gracicat. I'm on my second go around with Xanax (the first round was about 1 year and the current is about 14 months). I also have been prescribed .25 mg 2x a day and I've ALWAYS stayed there (even when my anxiety was horrible, I wouldn't go above it). The first time weaning off, as Graci said was a slow, uneventful weaning, with no side effects.

During my current go around I had already gone down to half of a .25 2x a day, but due to a increase in my anxiety, I had to go back to the full pill 2x's.

I'm not concerned about when the time comes to get off, I just have to get to the point when I'm ready (which I hope is real SOON!).

Hope this helps and good luck with what you decide to do.
