I started having severe anxiety and panic attacks after worrying about a health issue that turned out to be nothing. My first p-doc gave me xanax and I tried about 6 different antidepressants. Could not tolerate the antidepressants and the last one I tried made my anxiety even worse. Switched p-docs and he told me that my body was in such a state of panic that the antidepressants only made it worse and I was never given enough Xanax to shut it down. Also could not not tolerate Klonopin and would get breakthrough anxiety with xanax. I was switched to Xanax XR and I take 1mg twice a day. At first I had to take .5mg of regular xanax a day for break through anxiety. Now I just take the 1mg Xanax XR twice a day and been on it for about 7 months and anxiety is much better. I go to therapist to learn to deal with anxiety and I am ready to try to get off. My p-doc said give it another 2 months and then he will wean me off but slowly. My p-doc told me I had to be on enough to shut it down. Some doctors are scared to give patients benzos because of addiction issues but I was told people with anxiety usually don't have problems with addiction. Maybe you need to give the Lexapro a little longer to work, for me I could not tolerate any of them. Have you talked to your doctor about the way you feel? Maybe he would consider increasing your dosage or change to something else.
