Hello all,
I'm a 40 y/o male that has had mild asthma since grade school. In the past 20+ years, the only med I've needed was my rescue inhaler on the occasion that exercise or cold air would trigger a mild flare up.

Over the last year or two, I've had more and more problems, going on prednisone a couple times and getting some breathing (nebulizer) treatments at my local urgent care. This year I started consulting with an allergist, as I was still using rescue inhaler several times a week.

Started with Qvar and within a week, I felt totally normal again -- for a couple months. Then it seemed to stop working. Allergist added Singulair with no change. Then since October, I have gotten worse, with a heavy chested slightly labored breathing -- no cough or chest pain, but when I breath in and especially out, there's a heavy breathy wheeze. (I did have a chest xray and no sign of pneumonia -- and no cough or sinus issues). I have this everyday, and rescue inhaler only provides some brief relief. Tried a steroid injection (Celestone) with no improvement. Now I started oral prednisone again, which seems like the last option (?), starting with 20mgs/day, but after a week, no change. Prednisone with my rescue inhaler had worked in the past. Not sure why all this trouble since October.

Does anyone have advice as to when I should see a different type of doctor, and if so what type? Have any of you had persistent asthma -- symptoms everyday -- and doesn't seem to respond to anything? Could it be something else? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
