Scared after ITU.
Mar 15, 2004
Hi
I've just got out of hospital having had a really bad asthma attack and ended up on ITU, luckily not on lif******** but it was mentioned a couple of times. Then I had to spend 2 weeks on the ward and am still having to neb every few hours or so especially through the night.
I knew my asthma was bad, but I've always coped with it really well and managed it relatively successfully at home. What happened???? I'm on maximum treatment for my poor old lungs and they still don't work right! It's not fair. I'm really worried that if I have another bad attack I might end up intubated and it's a scary thought, what happens if I don't wake up.
This has really knocked my confidence, and I'm not coping with my asthma as well as I did.
Going to clinic tomorrow so will see what they say

Katie i'm so sorry to hear your doing so badly!
Could it be "brittle asthma"? Meaning your asthma is unresponsive to medication and can randomly have dramatic drops or rises in pulmonary function. There is no treatment sorry to say but it is being investigated as a different disease than asthma, with different treatments hopefully on the way. Also could there be something your being exposed to that your allergic to or that is bothering your lungs? Might be worth making some environmental changes. Have you considered Xolair? Allergy shots? Also hear great things about accupuncture for asthma as a complimentary treatment!
I wish I could say the right thing for what is wrong..have you had a CBC? Could be somethin workin funny.
I hope you find relief soon hang in there!
by the way do you know what happned to hotchic?
we haven't heard from her in weeks! kind of concerned!
Hi
Thanks for replying. The term 'brittle' has been used to describe me in the past, along with severe and uncontrolled. I didn't know that it was being investigated as something different, it's interesting to know.
What is a CBC? I've had an ECG and an Echo-cardiogram to check the heart valves, one is a wee bit dodgy, but probably just from the high doses of ventolin and theophyllin and serevent.
What is xolair? I get a bit confused as the names for stuff is different over here. I know they are considering giving me anti allergy shots or something, but I'm waiting for test results. I have asthma clininc tomorrow, so I hoping I'll get more answers then.
The scariest thing is that I seem to be getting worse, each time I have an attack I respond less to the medication. They're throwing more and more meds at me, which work for a while and then just kinda stop? I'm wondering what they are going to do when they run out of drugs to give me.
At least they are trying to get my pred dose down. I'm not holding out much hoe of gettin off it though, every time they reduce it my peak flows go through the floor. Down to 30mgs from 50mgs though, so it's an improvement. It just seems to be going so slowly. And I'm getting sooo fat! Not too bad yet, but if I carry on the way I'm going I'll be the size of a small elephant by the summer!
I think I'll give the acupuncture a go, will try anything, and it's can hurt.... can it?? I wonder where they put the needles?!?

I was wondering where hotchic was too, I'm hoping she is ok, cos she normally manages to get on here even when she is in hospital. Maybe the board has banned her or something?

Do you know why they put stars over life support in my original post? very strange, I'm sure that isn't offensive!
Anyway
Thanks again
Katie
x x x
