Re: Asthma attack?
May 31, 2004
I just got diagnosed with asthma and today i think i might have had an asthma attack. What exactly is an asthma attack..like how does it feel and what does it do?
An asthma attack is constriction of the bronchial tubes with excess mucus production, coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing (for most people). Everyone's asthma is different. You may or may not have all of those symptoms. Some people have cough-variant asthma where coughing is the main symptom and wheezing is either not there or barely there. Others have shortness of breath as their dominant symptom. It depends on the person.

For me, the warning signs that one is coming on are shortness of breath, runny nose, itchy chest, and a few coughs at first. When it actually comes, I get spasms of coughing, an audible wheezing/crackling kind of sound in my chest, and a lowering of my usual number on my peak flow meter.
