Needing ideas
Feb 13, 2008
Ok, I dont know what it is but lately I'm having about 6 attacks a day. Im already doing advair, singulair, prednisone daily along with the albuterol and tess whatever pills for coughing when I have an attack. I cough so much and hard, I'm going into attacks like crazy. Does anyone else have anymore ideas? Do you think if I used my nebulizer daily if that would help?

I can relate. I went through the exact same thing about 2 years ago. I even took the exact same course of medications. (Still on all but the Prednisone year round.) After months of coughing attacks where I couldn't catch a breath, I was miserable. I think I went to the doctor 9 times in the first 5 weeks.

First they increased my Advair from 100 to 250. Then they added Singulair, then I went up to Advair 500. I also went through a couple rounds of Prednisone. I was also put on PPI's for reflux, even though I don't get heartburn. I ended up getting tested by a GI doc for reflux and they upped my dosages to 2 PPI's per day. Prevacid worked the best. I was already on Allegra, Flonase and they added Astelin for the allergies.

Eventually they checked for pertussis. After 3 tests that came back inconclusive, they concluded that my body had worn down so much that I had also contracted Pertussis...otherwise known as the 100 day cough. Thankfully I had been treated early on for a lasting sinus infection which had also treated the pertussis.

Ironically, for me every one of these items, with the exception of allergies, has the main symptom of a cough. Through trial and persistence with my doctor, I finally found my solution in a multi dimensional approach.

If you really think you are having allergy problems, you might look into Zyrtec that is OTC now. Also, you might want to check the reflux board for LPR which can have a cough as a symptom.

Good luck getting back on track.
