Re: Rescue Inhaler
Mar 7, 2008
I cough - a whole lot - when my breathing is bad. I am *very* good at coughing (and it's gotta be good for the abs! :D)! My chest gets tight - feels like I'm breathing through a filter. Sometimes the docs hear me wheezing...last time she said I sounded restricted when I exhaled...and I cough up a lot of stuff when my breathing is bad. My O2 stats are usually good also - although I think a few times they've been a bit lower than normal.

Singing, talking, and laughing are definite cough triggers for me. Sometimes I have to grab my Xopenex in the middle of a conversation because I'm having a hard time talking without running out of breath. Something about the time of day makes it worse also - around 4-5 pm my breathing often gets a bit worse. I don't know why - damp night air? Cold air also makes it worse, so I try to remember to use my rescuer before I go out in the cold to work or do other exercise (yes, I still do stuff outside - went snowshoeing on Christmas Day. Used my inhaler, didn't have a problem).

Yes, the rescuer does help - when I use it while talking (for instance), I go from not being able to talk without stopping to cough to talking normally within a few minutes. The only thing - someone else mentioned this - there will still be gunk in your lungs, especially if you've needed your rescuer for a while before using it. So it may take a while to completely quit coughing and get the stuff cleared out.

I'm having a rough time with my breathing right now. So I've temporarily increased my inhaled steroid use (prescription allows for it); that should help clear out my lungs I think. I'm also using my rescuer more until the steroids work - takes 1-2 weeks I think.

Hey Gabby

This sounds just like me! Im also very good at coughing lol. (and the whole abs thing lol I know what u mean!) I get chest tightness all the time and your right it does feel like breathing through a filter. But I dont cough up to much stuff till after I use my rescue inhaler. My O2 stats are also usually good.

What triggers my coughing is mostly laughing and strong emotions (excitement, being upset....so on) cold air, and pressure changes in the weather, (especially when a storm is coming). And this past Friday was bad. I dont know if you heard of the tornados and thunderstorms in FL but that was in my town. Anyways the only time it effects my talking is when I am already having problems but talking never triggers it. I also have problems at night. Most of the time I dont make it the whole night without waking up and coughing my head off.

However the rescue inhaler does help! Anytime I am having problems I take 2 puffs and I am usually good to go. Within a few mins im usually clear and the coughing eases off. I still cough for a lil bit afterwards but that just b/c im coughing up everything out of my lungs. I def. dont go any where with out my inhaler b/c im the type of girl thats always laughing so I would hate to get stuck somewhere without it and cough my head off.
