Hi ncs and welcome

I understand the pain levels at (what sounds like) the L3 and L5 or L4 and S1 levels. Mine was a 9.5-10 at the L5/S1, can't remember what the L4/L5 was. Anyway...what was the diagnosis? Herniation? Rupture? Tear? Maybe we can help you out here if we had a little more information.

Pain management is a good thing. Fusion is not. There are OTHER types of surgeries out there that are "non-invasive". This is why I ask what the diagnosis is....it will help us give you the correct non-invasive options that are available for your particular injury. Fusion is considered a last resort thing, when everything else has failed. Heck, I've even heard of someone getting a 4-level IDET before they had their fusion surgery done. I say it that way because at 4 levels, the IDET is practically guaranteed to fail (the percentages are below 20%). But they gave it a shot on that 20% chance he would avoid fusion. But it also depends on other factors too. Your pocketbook for one. Your home situation for another (do you have small children, are you single, do you have a good support system set up, etc.).

There is no ONE cure for back problems. Your answer may just very well lie in utilizing BOTH options (surgery AND pain management)....but the least scary of both worlds. Good luck to you.
Thank you for your response, I had my wife get the report, my surgeon told me all 3 are herniated, the report says, L5-S1, L4-5, L3-4 (if that helps) I cant understand what this means, maybe you will though it says "lumbar spondylosis in protrusions at L3-4, L4-5, and L5-S1, with encroachment upon the left L5 root, and encroachment upon the intra foraminal portion of the right L5 root.

Money is not an issue as long as it is approved by my work ( I work law enforcement and it was an on the job injury, and they have been extremely accomodating since they sent me to their Dr. and he concurred with every course of action and diagnosis from my Dr., I have a 4 year old, and a 6 year old who I take to school daily, dress, feed etc. My wife works during the day and is EXTREMELY caring and helpful when home.
