Since early March, I've been experiencing shooting tingling pain down both legs, and lower lumbar back pain. Went to my dr and all the neurological tests she did came back normal.(sensation, reflexes) In the beginning, it came and went but as of last week it has pretty much come to stay. Doc put me on Bextra,(providing the dumb insurance company ever approves it) which helped till I ran out of samples, now I'm living on Advil and it isn't doing a thing. Last week, did a lower back xray series and I guess that must have turned out neg.for anything because they haven't contacted me back. Does sciatica always show up on xray?and for those of you with it, what pain med really, really helps? am getting to the point where my quality of sleep is disturbed, because of the pain and about ready to go back to the dr. I am also doing PT, which also doesn't seem to be having any significant improvements to things.
thanks

Even if you hadn't heard from your Doctor's office, I wouldn't assume that the xrays didn't show anything. Back in November I had xrays done and somehow my Doctor's office "lost" the result and never got back to me. With the holidays and it being a busy time of year I just kind of lived with the pain until January. When I returned to my Doctor's office in January, it turned out my xray results were never put in my file and they had to track them down. Anyway, to make a long story short, the xrays showed DDD and my Doctor's office immediately referred me to Orthopedic surgeon. An MRI revealed a collapsed disc (L4/L5) and a herniated disc (S1). In addition I have had an EMG and it revealed severe nerve compression which is causing the leg pain and weakness in my left leg. While it is true that sciatica will not show up on an xray, it is possible that the condition leading to the sciatica will be revealed, often times xrays aren't very conclusive; so it may be necessary to have an MRI and/or a nerve study. Sometimes Doctor's office's just get busy and they don't always follow-up like they should. I would call them first thing Monday. Keep us posted on how you are doing.
