Hi Miranda,

I understand exactly how you feel about both doctors and medications.

Some medications are much safer to take than others. For example, you should only take narcotic pain relievers when you really need them, but it is quite safe to take anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen (sold as Advil, Motrin, etc). Ibuprofen is very important to take during the acute phase of a sciatic attack. The symptoms in your butt and down your leg are due to inflammation of the nerve. Ibuprofen reduces that inflammation.

Having an MRI is entirely noninvasive (unlike other diagnostic procedures like discograms). Some likely causes of your pain are spinal stenosis or a herniated disc. A good physical therapist will show you different exercises to do depending on which it is (stenosis or a herniation). But good body mechanics are important in either case. Have you tried physical therapy?
